62826/29 telegram of the 13th August last, in which it has
(3) (nicire)

already been arranged to purchase three locomotives
for the British section, in order that they may haul
through traffic to Canton, upon the understanding that,
when the Chinese section can afford to purchase them,
these three locomotives will be transferred to that
section. It is also necessary to purchase
additional rolling stock for the through trains to
Canton, and the General Manager of the British
section is conferring with the authorities of the
Chinese section as to the arrangements to be made in
this connection. Meanwhile, Your lordship will find
included on page 92 of the Colony's estimates for next year, a copy of which accompanied my despatch
No.395 of the 5th instant, the sum of $330,000 for
new passenger coaches. It is my hope that eventually most of these coaches will be taken over by the
Chinese section. In the meanwhile, of course,
they will be hired to that section as required. The Hong Kong Government is also much in favour of the proposal of the Chinese authorities to build
feeder lines and motor roads, in connection with
the Chinese section of the Kowloon-Canton railway.
But details of these schemes are still lacking.
6. As regards the loop-line railway round Canton, this project is, in the opinion of the Hong Kong Government, of vital interest to the future of this Colony, and I take this opportunity of
referring Your Lordship to my memorandum on the subject, dated the 15th May, 1926, enclosed in my
secret despatch
